What is red and white giant flying squirrel?

The red and white giant flying squirrel, also known as the red and white giant squirrel, is a species of flying squirrel native to the southeastern Himalayas, and parts of South and Southeast Asia. They are primarily found in forests at high altitudes, ranging from 800 to 3,400 meters above sea level.

These squirrels are large in size, measuring around 45 to 62 centimeters in length, with a distinctive red and white coloration on their fur. Their most notable feature is their ability to glide through the air using a patagium, a membrane that stretches from their wrist to their ankles, allowing them to soar distances of up to 100 meters between trees.

Red and white giant flying squirrels are nocturnal animals, spending their days resting in tree cavities or nests made out of leaves, twigs, and branches. They are herbivorous, feeding on a diet of fruits, nuts, seeds, and leaves.

Due to habitat loss and hunting for their fur and meat, the red and white giant flying squirrel is listed as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Conservation efforts are being made to protect their habitat and regulate hunting to ensure the survival of this unique squirrel species.
